The swing rioters were agricultural workers in southern England and East Anglia who protested by destroying the threshing machines that had just been introduced. The riots began in the Elham valley area in the eastern part of Kent county in the summer of 1830 and by early December spread across the whole of southern England and East Anglia.
Fear of loss of employment and demand for wage increases were the primary reasons for the riots.
