  • The young Bengal movement was a movement led by thinkers of the Hindu College of Calcutta. These thinkers were also known by the name Derozians. This name was given to them after one teacher of the same college, Henry Louis Vivian Derozio.
  • Vivian Derozio | Young Bengal Movement: Ideas, Objectives and Teaching. During the late 1820s and early 1830s, there was emergence of a radical and intellectual trend among the youth in Bengal, which came to be known as the 'Young Bengal Movement'.
  • Objectives: They wanted to promote radical ideas through teachings and by organizing debates and discussions on Literature, History, Philosophy and Science. The basic motto of Derozio was to spread intellectual revolution among young students. He was a great propounder of liberal thinking.
  • The Society for the Acquisition of General Knowledge was established on 20 February 1838 by Young Bengal group where they discussed various aspects of Western science, and stood for a number of social reforms, such as the prohibition of caste taboos, child marriage, kulin polygamy or the ban on widow remarriage
