The best gift is one that comes with no conditions and no expectations. As most of the answers here reflect, the words you say when presenting a gift should be minimal. In most situations, I say the bare minimum for the occasion. “Happy birthday!” “Congratulations!” “Nice work!” Or I simply hand the person the gift with a smile.
A gift is supposed to reflect our feelings for someone else and to celebrate their milestone or accomplishment. Typically, it is that person’s “day,” such as a birthday, Mothers Day, graduation, Bar Mitzvah, or the day of a promotion at work. If we attach a lengthy speech to the presentation of a gift, that turns attention away from the recipient and back to ourselves, which strikes me as a selfish approach.
