Answer:
I have always taken this phrase quite literally - i.e. to want to live the life of another person. Their friends, their livelihood, their family and so on….
I often think that it a sad phrase when used in the context I have defined. It is a statement of dissatisfaction with ones own lot and desire to be someone else.
It is projection and can be disempowering UNLESS the person whose life someone wants is used as an aspirational model, a source of motivation.
