Accordion books were first started in China after 594 AD, when woodblock printing was started there. In woodblock printing, the piece of paper (also invented in China) was rubbed over a block of wood containing ink and embedded letters. Since both sides of the paper could not be printed, the paper was folded and stitched to one side. This was the accordion book.
