Under the Dawes plan the German economy did well, but following the Wall Street Crash this plan was discontinued. Hjalmar Schacht was Hitler’s finance minister, and under him free market economic ceased, and prices of all commodities were fixed by the government. Demand was managed by means of government intervention. The lack of foreign currency was overcome by means of autarky, producing as much as possible at home. Ersatz means substitute and so an effort was made to substitute home grown products for imports. Thus, a coffee substitute was made from acorns. For items that could not be made at home, barter agreements were possible, or else Germany took over those areas producing them.
