Hi friend,
Your answer:
Mrs.Thompson saw her husband, Mr. Thompson approaching.
He was carrying the precious burden of the sick child, Maggie.
The burden is precious for Mr.Thompson as he seemed to have formed a very special bond with the little sick child as soon as he lifted her in his arms.
Hope it helps!

Mrs.Jane Thompson saw her husband Mr.Thompson approaching towards her.
As described in the story Mr.Thompson he was carrying a precious burden which is non other than Maggie herself,a disabled and bed ridden child.
It was a "precious burden" .It is composed of two words "precious" and "burden" which is a irony as although Maggie's affection and epathy shown by Mr.Thompson was precious but still it was first recommended to be a burden by Mrs.Thompson.
Thank you!!!
