Answer:

Shivaji Maharaj I consider an ideal leader. Having born under slavary of Muslim kingdomes like Adilshaha, Nizams and later Moghal and British invadors, he could gather the youth of the time at a very early age. He was a principled king who returned the daughter-in-law of the Kalyan subhedar with respect saying that she was akin to his own mother. This was not the expected behaviour in those times. That's character!

A leader needs to have strength for taking a stand not expected by the populace. He had that moral strength. He along with his son Sambhaji escaped from Agra, broke the encirclement of his fort, shook Shahistekhan, the uncle of Aurangzeb when he dared to come and stay in Pune to defeat Shivaji Maharaj. He killed Afzal Khan and defeated his huge army not withstanding the huge gape in their strengths. He concurred south till Tanjavar. Is it not extra ordinary for a foot soldier to travel and fight all the way from Agra to Tanjavar? British did not dare to carry out any action during his time in Maharashtra.

His instructions to his Army are impressive. They are modern even by today's standards. He refrained his soldiers from unnecessary violence.

He is said to have died by the age of 40 years. What he achieved in a short life span is amazing.

I wonder what kind of leadership he must have had to inspire the whole Maharashtra to unite and fight the en-slavers.

A man who begins with nothing but a noble intention and units the whole country to achieve the goal is truly a great leader!
