initially when the narrator noticed some things missing from her own house and inquired about it from her mother, she got to know that an old acquaintance mrs. dorling was taking things from their house to her own house to ostensibly keep the things safe during the war period. the narrator on hearing this is not entirely convinced and not fully approving. but since she was a small girl at that time, she did not voice her opinions.
