(a) Very poor person

  • The full BPL form  is "below the poverty line". An economic benchmark related to baseline income. It was established by the Indian government.
  • This can help  identify  financially vulnerable individuals and households in urgent need of government assistance.
  • The list should include the names of people whose household income is less than that set by the government.
  • Using this methodology, there were 354 million (29.6% of the population) below the poverty line in 2009-2010 and   269 million (21.9% of the population) in 2011-2012.Families with BPL cards live below the state poverty line.
  • BPL families receive 10-20 kg of food per month per family for 50% of their economic value.
