Answer: District magistrate

Explanation: During 1917 the cultivators of Champaran district of Bihar were forced to grow indigo by the Europeans. This led to a high degree of  suffering for the farmers as they could not grow any other crop nor paid handsomely for the cultivation of indigo.

Gandhiji  was in dark about the sufferings of the peasant until of this until Rajkumar Shukla, a farmer from Bihar narrated the entire plight of the farmers and even convinced him to pay a visit to Champaran . After much of persuasion, Gandhiji  promised to come over to Champaran soon.

During April 1917 he went to Champaran in company with Rajkumar . As soon as he arrived the District Magistrate sent him a notice ,directing him to leave the district as soon as possible.

Gandhi did not adhere to his order and was summoned to be present before the court.
