A heterogeneous mixture is a mixture that doesn't have any uniformity in it. If you take a mixture of salt and water a then examine it under a microscope, you would see that the particles are uniformly distributed. But if you examine a mixture of water and sand, then you would see that there is no uniformity in the mixture. E.g. - mixture of sand and water.
