Decomposers, such as fungi, bacteria and invertebrates, play a critical role in nutrient cycling and without them the earth's ecosystem may not support life as we know it. ... Describe the Probable Effects on an Ecosystem if All Decomposers Were to Die ... When these organisms die, the carbon remains locked in their bodies.

Decomposers feed on dead plants , animals or their waste products and convert complex organic molecule into simpler inorganic molecule like nitrogen, carbon dioxide and many other nutrients and refix them into nutrient pool like soil, air and water to be used up again by the plants .

If there will be no decomposers , then once the nutrients from the soil is used by plants , they can never be fix up in the soil again and soon our earth will run out of nutrients. Dead bodies of plants and animals will lie on the ground as it is and foul smell will come from them.
