The sunlight enters our atmosphere. Due to refraction of light it bends towards the earth. The surface of the earth reflects it back to atmosphere.

During the day the atmosphere reflects most of the sunlight and heat into the space. This is because if heat is absorbed during the day, the temperature would be too much for organisms to bear. During the night , the atmosphere absorbs most of the heat. This is done to keep the earth warm in absence of sun, otherwise earth would become too cold to support life.

Due to many man-made and natural factors , the various green house gases like carbon dioxide, water vapour, methane etc. rise up in the atmosphere. They absorb much heat that enters the atmosphere and do not let it escape. Due to this, much less heat escapes into the space and the earth is kept warm. This is called green-house effect.

This phenomenon is used in green houses in cold areas like Siberia to grow vegetables that require comparatively high temperature to grow.
