Combustion

In many chemical reactions reactants form different products under different conditions. Such reactions need monitoring. A good example of such a reaction is combustion.

Most fuels are hydrocarbons or alkanols. When these compounds burn in an oxygen-rich environment they produce carbon dioxide and water. If there is not enough oxygen present for complete combustion, carbon monoxide or carbon are produced instead of carbon dioxide. Water vapour is always produced.

Petrol is mostly octane. Balanced chemical equations for the combustion of octane are shown below.

Complete combustion

C8H18 (g) + 25/2 O2 (g) --> 8 CO2 (g) + 9 H2O (g)

Incomplete combustion

C8H18 (g) + 17/2 O2 (g) --> 8 CO (g) + 9 H2O (g)

C8H18 (g) + 9/2 O2 (g) --> 8 C (g) + 9 H2O (g)

Incomplete combustion is undesirable for the following reasons

The reactions are not as exothermic, thus wasting energy.

Carbon monoxide is a dangerous poison.

Carbon (soot) particles in the air are harmful to health, especially for people with respiratory problems such as asthma.

For these reasons, combustion reactions are often monitored. Specifically, levels of oxygen and carbon monoxide gas may be monitored to ensure complete combustion.

Many modern car engines are computer controlled and include oxygen sensors.
