A prime number is defined as a number with two positive divisors only. As 1 has only one positive divisor (1 itself), it does not meet the criteria to be a prime.

Similarly, a composite number is a number that can be rewritten as the product of two integers both larger than 1, and 1 does not meet that criteria too.

Hence 1 is neither prime nor composite.

Answer:

One is neither prime nor composite. To be a prime number, a number must have two positive divisors: the number itself and one. One only has a single positive divisor. Thus it is neither prime nor composite.
