82degree30 minutes east is selected as our standard meridian as it passes almost through the centre of the country.
From the east to west we have 30 longitudes passing through our country. If there would not been any standard time then the people would follow their local time that could lead to a terrible mess. This means when the time in Arunachal Pradesh would be 6 the time in Gujarat would be 4(2 hr time difference).
It was selected by calculations done by scientists. The country was divided into two halves by dividing equal number of longitudes in each half.By these complex calculations 82degree30 minutes east became the standard meridian of India.
