India has a longitudinal extent of 30 from Arunachal Pradesh to Western Gujarat. It accounts for a time lag of 2 hours. However, to keep standard time acrosss the country, 82°30'E, central longitude of India (passing through Mirzapur, Uttar Pradesh), is selected as standard meridian of India.

From Gujarat to Arunachal Pradesh there is a time lag of two hours. Hence, time along the Standard Meridian of India (82° 30' E) passing through Mirzapur (in Uttar Pradesh) is taken as the standard time for the whole country.
