Chickens sleep and wake according to the sunrise and sunsets of where they live. Most diurnal animals, (active during daylight), especially prey animals like chickens, wake at sunrise and go to sleep at sunset. The reason is that their eyes are adapted to daylight, so they'd just stumble around in the dark and not be able to see food, predators, or other dangers. Conversely, to sleep during the day means you're not able to watch out for predators at a time they can see you best, (in the light).
