If a cricket player does not move his/her hands backwards while catching the ball, the ball (that is in motion) will come to rest instantaneously (quickly). This may damage the hand of the fielder.

If he/she moves his/her hands backwards the ball comes to rest gradually not causing damage to his/her hand.

According to Newton's law of motion, Force=Mass *(change in velocity\speed)/time. Greater the time used to stop the ball,lesser the impact of ball on hands and thus less changes of being hurt by ball and get injured
