there are many reasons
1)in long range thermometer the precision is little bit difficult to get
2)body temperature is normally 37-38 degrees but in few cases the body temperature gets low and even gets high thus max is 42 so it has short range
3) short range is easy to carry and watch
4) clinical one has kink for noting down the exact temperature
