Why a dark brown ring is produced at the junction?

While performing the test first freshly prepared ferrous sulfate is added then concentrated Sulphuric acid is slowly added along the walls of the tube. Sulphuric acid being denser settles down and reacts only with small amount of nitrate and ferrous sulfate stays at the top and at the junction there is a ring formed.
