One reason I can think of is people’s depth perception when we look up and down. We have no reference in our brain to compare to. When we look ahead, we see trees, other people, cars, etc… we know their size from experience. We can judge the distance from us by relative size between the objects in the distance. Pilots, skydivers, and others that use the vertical axis more often have developed that perception. The rest of us just don’t have enough experience with it.
