Frogs have evolved to lay so many (unfertilized) eggs because only a few of them survive the onslaught of predators. The number is to increase the chances of decrease the mortality rate.

Predators eat so many of those eggs and they die because of so many causes, very few of those THOUSANDS actually survive until adulthood. It’s to give their species the best chance at surviving into the next generation.
