Magnetism is a property of magnets, the Earth and magnetized metal such as a compass needle. Magnetic forcecan attract certain metals and cause them to move without actually touching them. Therefore we say thatmagnetic force works at a distance.

A magnet has a magnetic field around it.
The strength of the magnet decides how large the magnetic field would be.
So if any object comes in the magnetic field of a magnet some amount of force is experienced by it even if it is not in direct contact with the magnet.
Thus, a magnet can act from distance.
