metal rod is denser than water
ship is not a solid block of iron and steel.
a ship is hollow object made up of iron and steel which contains lot of air in it
due to prsence of a lot of air in it the average density of ship becomes less than the density of water
since the average density ship is less than water it floats on water
when ship is placed in water it sinks to a certain level so that the weight of water is displaced by its submerged portion is equal to weight of the ship
since the ship fulfils the condition of flotation it floats on water
