why a person suffering once from smallpox cannot suffer from it again

That is not true. A person can still get small pox even he suffered it before.

This is because when the immune system of our body first come across an infectious organisms like a virus causing small pox, it responds against virus and then remembers it specifically. When next time particular microbe or its closer relatives enter the body, immune system of the body responds with the pathogen even with greator vigour. This eliminates the infection more quickly than the first time and thus we do not suffer with the disease again.
