The scale is important in a map because it enables us to get the idea of what exactly is its position on the earth.

Explanation:

The earth is huge, and when it is drawn on piece of paper this representation is called a map. Practically, it is not possible to draw a map as large as earth, therefore we draw maps and to be accurate of the distance between the places of a scale of a map is used. It is the ratio of the area represented on the map to the actual area present on the earth.

For example, if the scale of the map reads as Scale 0.5:10, it means that for every 0.5 distance or length of the map the actual area covered on the earth would be 10 kms. So, the scale used in this process has made the representation of large areas easier and convenient. That’s why we need scales in maps.
