the pressure reduce with increase in surface area a thin strap will aplly more pressure on the shoulder as compared to the broad strap that is why school bags are made of broad strap

they are wide as we know that children carry so much load on their shoulders which consists of book, notebooks etc. to just ensure that children do not get any harm or disease( for eg. servical etc. ) by carrying so much load on their shoulders it is made wide so that the heavy load does not seems like heavy load to the students.
Because it is easy to carry. A wider strap distributes the force throughout a greater surface area.
