This happens because mass is a property of the object which remains constant, i.e mass of an object will be same whether it is on earth or moon or mars or space.
But weight depends upon the gravitational force. Weight on moon will be different than that on earth as gravity on both is different. As in space, there is no gravity, hence weight in space is zero.
Also Weight=mass X acceleration due to gravity
