Why a solid can have any number of free surfaces and a liquid has only 1 upper free surface and gases have none?

Solids may have indefinite sides, so they have number of free surfaces whereas in liquid, kept in a container would always have only the upper free surface as it is packed from all the sides by the container. Gases can move around freely and therefore they have no surface.
