Why a sound wave does not travel through a vacuum whereas a light wave does

because sound wave need a medium to travel.

light waves are a wave in the electromagnetic field. this field can exist in vacuum. sound needs  either solid liquid or gas to propagate and hence it is called mechanical waves. sound is a form of energy which is transferred by vibrating air molecules if motion of propagation is air.
