Why ac is preferred over dc for long distance transmission of electricity?

It can be easily and cheaply changed from one voltage to another by a transformer with very little loss of energy.

AC (alternating current) carries the current at a high speed without the loss or waste of energy while DC (direct current) losses it's electrons because it is unidirectional.
