Answer:

Acetic acid forms a dimer in benzene solution. ... This happens with acetic acid dissolved in benzene, but not with acetic acid dissolved in water. In the aqueous solution, acetic acid will hydrogen bond to water rather than itself, and dimerization does not occur.

Acetic acid does not act as an acid in the benzene solution because acetic acid dimerizes in benzene due to hydrogen bonding.

  • Benzene being a non-polar solvent does not react with acetic acid. On the other hand, acetic acid is a polar molecule.
  • Due to the presence of electronegativity difference between Oxygen and Hydrogen, acetic acid undergoes dimerization by forming an intermolecular hydrogen bond with another acetic acid molecule.
  • Therefore, when acetic acid is mixed with benzene, then the polar molecules of acetic acid stick together and thus it does not act as an acid in the benzene solution.
