Indian Constitution is one of the longest of all the Constitutions in the world.

And the reason is simple.

It had to do and manage much more than any other nation state in the history of mankind had ever done .

It was almost like having a constitution for the entire Europe. A land as diverse as ours needed a document that had derived from the collective wisdom of the entire world.

Therefore Indian constitution has taken provisions from many other constitutions of the world. A short list of the features taken from othet constitution is as follows-

Republic-French Constitution.

Parliamentary form- British Constitution

Single Citizenship-British Constitution

Fundamental Rights-USA Constitution

Amendment Provision-South African Constitution

Concurrent List-Australian Constitution

Provisions related to Trade and Commerce-Australian Constitution

Emergency provision-Germany

Federalism-Canada

Fundamental Duties-Ireland and Japan

And many more.

So basically Indian Constitution makers picked the best practices from all over the world and stitched them together so that it could match the social fabric of India.

All these provisions are time tested across the various social and economic setups.

So asking why are we following a constitution that was written 67 years ago is almost equivalent to asking as to why are we following the 1000 year old tradition of bathing in the morning and sleeping in the night. Certain things have acquired the status of gospel truth. Because, years and years of experiments in certain fields have led to saturation of wisdom in those field. Such as the self government or democracy.

Now it is almost universally accepted that democracy is the best form of Govt. (With some reservations of course).

Besides ever since the constitution was accepted, it has undergone more than 100 amendments. So it not exactly the same constitution that was written 67 years ago.

Many important amendments have taken place since.

Reservation in promotion- 16(4)A
Anti defection law- Schedule 10
Panchayati raj and Municipal Bodies-Schedule 11 and 12
Insertion of words Secular and Socialist in Constitution preamble.
Insertion of many new Directive principles 39A, 43A, 43B, 48A.
Besides Supreme Court by its judgments in many landmark cases such as Keshwanand Bharati, Menaka Gandhi, Minerva Mills and many more has -

Widened the scope of Fundamental Rights.
Resticted the power of Executive and Legislature to curtail these rights.
In fact, in some cases even beyond the point, that was in contemplation of Constitution makers.

So, we are following Constitution that was written 67 years ago with many modern adaptations. Many more to come. As I write this answer many amendments of constitution are in the process of discussion and drafting.
