Acquired immunodeficiency syndrome or Acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS) is a syndrome caused by a virus called HIV. Acquired means that people are not born with the disease. They get it after being infected with the HIV virus. Immune or Immuno- talks about the immune system.

AIDS or Acquired Immuno Deficiency Syndrome is caused by the retrovirus which is HIV or Human Immunodeficiency Virus.

\huge\bold{Question:}

Why aids is considered a syndrome and not merely a disease ?

\huge\bold{Answer:}

It is considered a syndrome and not merely a disease because AIDS causing the virus mainly HIV enters the body of healthy person generally through the sexual organs and/or through blood transfusion and subsequently spreads to lymph nodes all over the body. It damages the immune system and therefore, due to it the body is no longer able to fight off many minor infections. Even a small cold infection can turn into pneumonia or a type of minor gut infection may lead to severe diarrhoea with the loss of much quantity of blood.

The effects of minor diseases become so severe that they even kill the patients suffering from AIDS. In other words, there are no specific disease symptoms from AIDS and the patient develops many complex diseases and symptoms.

That is the reason why AIDS is considered to be a 'syndrome' and not merely a disease.
