To avoid lumps of small particles and clogging of the finer sieves, the soil should be air-dried before sifting.
What is Sieve analysis:
- Before using sieves, make sure they're clean.
- The actual sieving might be done by hand or with a sieve shaker, as in modern laboratories.
- To evaluate the findings of sieve analysis of soil, grading curves with the ordinates reflecting cumulative percentage passing and the abscissa of the sieve opening on a logarithmic scale can be produced.
- These curves can be used to determine whether a sample's grading adheres to the specification or is too coarse or fine, or is deficient in a certain size.
