Why Al metal cannot be obtained by the reduction of Al2O3 with coke? Explain.

  • Aluminium or Al forms ionic bond which is strong.
  • It is much stronger than Coke.
  • Aluminium has much stronger affinity than coke.
  • Coke does not even form an ionic bond.
  • Now, we know reduction reaction is a reaction where a stronger elementreduces the stronger one to make it pure.
  • Here, we want to reduce aluminium from aluminium oxide.
  • But, Coke which is is going to act as a reducing agent, is less stronger than aluminium.
  • Hence, aluminium cannot be obtained by reduction with the help of coke from aluminium oxide.
