Alcohols and phenols are soluble in water, because of the formation of the hydrogen bond while mixing them with water.
in other words , this is due to the hydroxyl group in the alcohol and phenols which is able to form hydrogen bons with water molecules.
As the length of the hydrogencarbonate chain increase , the solublity in water decrease.
