Algae in the Chlorophyceae family are green in colour.

  • Chlorophylls a and b are the dominant pigments in them, giving them their green hue.
  • Unicellular, colonial, or filamentous organisms make up Chlorophyceae.
  • They have a stiff cell wall with an exterior layer of pectose and an inner layer of cellulose.
  • Chlamydomonas, Volvox, Ulothrix, Spirogyra, and Chara are just a few Chlorophyceae species.
  • Most plants' green colour comes from a pigment called chlorophyll. It is green because it absorbs other light colours like red and blue; hence, green light is sort of reflected out because the pigment does not absorb it. Chlorophyll content in algae is very high, giving them their emerald colour.
