Why alkains like NaOH and KOH should not be left exposed to air

Sodium Hydroxide (NaOH) and potassium Hydroxide (KOH) should not be left exposed to air because they mix with the carbon dioxide in air and form Sodium Carbonate and Potassium carbonate.
