The strength of metallic bond in alkaline earth metals is higher than alkalie metals due to presence of 2 electrons in its outermost shell as compared to alkalie metal which have only 1 electron in valence shell. Therefore alkaline earth metals are harder than alkali metals.

because valecy of alkaline earth metals has 2 electrons in its valence shell as alkali metals has 1 ; so stronger force of attraction make alkaline earth metals harder
