Sodium and potassium ions form important constituents of body fluids (electrolytes).The alkali metals have the largest atomic radii and the lowest first ionization energy in their periods. This combination makes it very easy to remove the single electron in the outermost (valence) shell of each.

the size of alkali metals is greater than alkali earth metal.... and hence they loose the electron easily than the alkali earth metals... which is the reason for this..
