The alkaline earth metals have a substantially greater tendency to form complexes with Lewis bases than do the alkali metals. The heavier alkaline earth metals also form complexes, but usually with a coordination number of 6 or higher. Complex formation is most important for the smaller cations (Mg 2+ and Ca 2+).
