Why alkyl group determines the physical properties of a hydrocarbon

Its because Physical properties are mainly controlled by the hydrocarbon chain of the organic compound. But other factors also control the physical properties.
For example melting point, boiling point, and polarity etc. alsodetermined by functional group. Alkyl substituent, geometry alsodetermine the chemical properties.
