The C-Mg bond in Grignards is more covalent than ionic in character. Hence it is less nucleophilic than a 'free' carbanion. Alkylation of Grignards can be achieved by addition of catalytic amounts of copper (I) salts or Li2CuCl4, but in these cases the reactive species is alkyl magnesium cuprate complex.
