the sperm as such does not contribute to mitochondria because they are left behind when the head finds it's way into the egg
the egg contains the mitochondria and the normal fusion too takes place....the mitochondria too divide as the embryo grows up thus we inherit percent of maternal dna as mitochondrial dna or mt-DNA
