Notochord is a characteristic feature of all cordates. The members of sub- phylum vertibrata posses notochord during the embryonic stage. But in adults the notochord is replaced by a bony vertebral column. Whereas in members of others sub- phyla of chordata the notochord remains as such. The urochordate and cephalochordates retain the notochord during their entire life cycle. Thus, the absence of notochord in adult vertibrates suggest that all vertibrates are cordates but all cordates are not vertibrates.
