At its prinstine state, ocean water cannot be consumed due to the presence of high amount of dissolved salts in it. In order to utilize that water, it needs to be distilled and purified to remove impurities which is a costly affair. Although many distillation industries have already started in many countries, especially in gulf area where a large percentage of portable water demand is satisfied by distillation/RO of sea water.

The process of distillation and purification of sea water is costly and consumes lots of energy, but the way water is utilized in current scenerio, distillation/RO plants seems to be the future for utilizing ocean water.

hope it helps you..

All water is not in usable form because it may contain germs and they may also be salty. Which means they are not in usable form. It may also contain mud or sand. That is why all water is not always in usable form and we have to process it before using it
