Alloys are commonly used in electrical heating devices because -

  • The electrical conductivity and melting point of an alloy is less than that of pure metals.

  • Example - Brass, an alloy of Copper and Zinc and Bronze, an alloy of Copper and Tin are not good conductors of electricity whereas copper is used for making electrical circuits.

  • So, an alloy of lead and Tin has a low melting point and is used for welding electric wires together.

  • If an alloy consists of mercury as one of its components it is called Amalgam.

  • Example = sodium - mercury amalgam and silver - mercury amalgam.
